In the yoga tradition, death does not mean the end, but a natural transition – the continuation of life in a new form. Although the unknown can be frightening, the science of yoga describes death as a profound and creative process, that can be consciously prepared for throughout life.
Our vitality – whether it shrinks or grows – depends on our inner state. Releasing emotions, thoughts and attitudes helps to create lightness and clarity, not only in everyday life, but also at the natural end of life.
Everything we own in this life – roles, things, relationships – will eventually be left behind. Letting go of attachments allows us to leave more easily, without clinging and fear.
Many spiritual traditions emphasise that we should set a conscious goal during our lifetime – where do I want to go after death? Practising this direction daily gives depth to life and prepares us for a conscious transition. However, if have no destination, our next birth will be shaped by the wishes and desires that were not satisfied in our earthly life – and in this case we no longer have control over our own journey.
What role does the fear of death play and is it possible to free ourselves from it? Is it possible to transit consciously? What is immortality and is it attainable? Does our family lineage influence us more than we realise? These topics will be explored in the August session of the “Path of Wisdom” lecture series.
